A substantial Victorian property in Clapton with a beautiful period room. The client had removed old carpet revealing original floorboards underneath in poor condition – stained, warped, and unsuitable for restoration. Decision was made to install new parquet flooring reflecting period character whilst providing practical, hard-wearing surface.
We removed the damaged boards and inspected substructure – joists were sound. We prepared the timber subfloor and levelled it where settlement had caused displacement. We laid a plywood sub-base providing stable, flat surface. Parquet blocks were installed in traditional herringbone pattern using adhesive and mechanical fixings.
The herringbone pattern creates visual rhythm complementing architectural features – cornicing, fireplaces, period doors all feel cohesive. Oak blocks were chosen to match age and colour of other period details. Once sealed with hardwearing lacquer, parquet provides sophisticated, professional finish enhancing property's character and value.
Parquet is solid blocks fitted in patterns (herringbone, basket weave, etc.). Engineered boards are larger planks. Parquet suits period properties and creates intricate visual effect. Engineered is quicker to fit and often more affordable.
Much longer than engineered – typically 2-3 weeks because each block must be fitted individually. Once adhesive cures, entire floor is sanded and sealed. Labour-intensive, which is why parquet costs more.
Yes, very. Solid wood blocks are harder-wearing than engineered boards. With proper sealing and maintenance, parquet floor can last 50+ years. High traffic areas will show wear over time, but this adds character to period room.
