Is it buckling or just cupping?

Cupping, where the edges of individual boards sit slightly higher than the centre, can often settle back down on its own once the excess moisture dries out, provided it hasn't been sitting that way for too long. Buckling is a step further, where the block has genuinely lifted or separated from the subfloor rather than just changing shape. Once that bond has failed, the block generally won't simply flatten itself back into place as the room dries out, and it needs to be physically lifted, cleaned and refitted.
Fixing isolated buckling
For a small number of affected blocks, repairs can usually be done locally without touching the rest of the floor:
- Resolve the moisture source first. Fixing the blocks without addressing whatever caused the moisture just means the same problem returns, so trace and fix the leak, ventilation gap or damp source before anything else.
- Lift the buckled blocks carefully, keeping track of their exact position and orientation if the pattern needs to line back up precisely.
- Clean and dry the subfloor underneath thoroughly before refitting anything.
- Refit the blocks with fresh adhesive or fixings once the subfloor is confirmed dry.
- Spot-sand and recoat the repaired area so it blends in with the surrounding finish rather than standing out as an obvious patch.
If any blocks are cracked, split or too damaged to reuse, they'll need replacing with new ones matched to the existing pattern and colour rather than being refitted as they are.
When buckling is more widespread
If a large section or the whole floor has buckled, that's usually a sign of a bigger moisture problem, such as a failed damp-proof membrane, a persistent leak, or a subfloor that was never properly prepared before the original installation. In these cases, patching individual blocks without addressing the scale of the problem tends to be a temporary fix at best.
